The “Sunrise Ruby”, a 25.59-carat Burmese ruby mounted by Cartier, was the top lot at Tuesday’s Magnificent and Noble Jewels sale at Sotheby’s Geneva, selling for 28.3 million Swiss francs (£19.6 million). Its exceptional size, along with its intense “pigeon’s blood” red colour, were reflected in the bidding war and eventual price; a new world record for a ruby sold at auction, and triple the price of the 8.62-carat “Graff Ruby” which was sold in November 2014. The Sunrise Ruby also broke the world auction record for the price-per-carat of any ruby, along with becoming the most expensive Cartier jewel ever auctioned.
“The Sunrise Ruby captivated me from the moment I saw it,” commented David Bennett, worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewellery division, after the sale. “Such an exquisite stone truly deserved the multiple-record-breaking price this evening.”
